Brickmakers , James Bourne. C19/20 The prime function of Origins UK is to provide obscure, rare, previously unpublished data which is pre-census and before official registration (1837); in addition to a whole range of material which often is unique to our site. Therefore, a high percentage of our data will not be found anywhere on any other genealogy/family history site.

Correspondingly we provide a varied and informative collection of social history articles, old documents, deeds, court rolls, extracts from wills and diaries, etc. To compliment all this we also have available a fascinating image gallery in which we include members’ donated photos for linking families and providing a visual social history record.

Our top researcher Gillian Smith is responsible for the publication of the family history of Russell Crowe, originally commissioned for the BBC, along with author Polly Hinchliffe who researched the social history. For more information about this unique, never before published, beautifully illustrated and accurately researched book ‘Where The Crowe Flies’ or click here to order from Lulu.

Gillian has recently researched the family history of top politician and former deputy Prime Minister of Britain John Prescott and appeared with him in the BBC film of his family history.

One of our main focuses is on Census Substitutes - directories mostly dating back prior to the first official registers of births, deaths and marriages in the UK and Ireland . They are a wealth of information for the genealogist, giving information such as; early names, settlement patterns, occupations, specific addresses and family members.

Examples of Census Substitutes being: Coleman Deeds covering most Welsh counties and Bachymynbym - Denbighshire, Documents, Wills, Indentures, Grants, Field Names, Court Rolls etc.  (We have Deeds and Documents for Wales dating back, in some cases, to the 13th century).
Our list of searchable databases includes; numerous ships lists, crew and passenger lists, muster rolls, parish records, Manchester workers, and factories - circa 1815 (extremely rare).
Irish Census Substitutes include; Griffiths Valuation taken between 1848 and 1864, Petty-Pender's Census of Ireland circa 1659 and many more - of which we are consistently expanding.  We also extract names from articles - to complement our databases.

Because we have access to rare books and publications much of our material is unique to Origins UK and cannot, to date, be found elsewhere on the world wide web.
Our team has reproduced some of the most informative articles from our large reference library with the aim of giving a textual and pictorial interpretation.  The sources used are out of print, and difficult to obtain.  Examples being; Glasgow Past and Present (four volumes), the Highland Clearances, the Coleman Deeds, Old Liverpool, the Penny Journal, the Dublin Penny Journal, the Cork Examiner and the London Illustrated News.

We are confident that membership to our site will unfold new avenues for the origins of your ancestors to complement your own family history research. In addition, we provide a contributions forum allowing you to add your own family history research interests, recipes, diaries, stories and even children's contributions.  We hope that our contributions forum will help members to build links and expand their interests.
